"Red Flag" laws

Hi! Today, I wanted to talk to you about an important tool that we just put in place to help keep Canadians safe—Red Flag Laws.

Basically, if you believe someone who has access to a firearm is a danger to themselves or to others, you can now apply for an emergency order; and one that doesn't even need a lawyer. In this way, you can ask a court to remove the firearm from a dangerous person or a dangerous situation.

We're now launching a new awareness initiative and a new call for proposals to identify organizations that can help us get the word out to everyone across the country.

If you're worried about yourself, or a loved one, a neighbour, or anyone, these new laws give you another way to take action.

And resources were just published online to help and support you through the process.

Don't forget; always call 9-1-1 in an emergency.

Let's work together to tackle gun violence, tackle domestic violence and make our community and our country safer for everyone.

Minister of Official Languages and Associate Minister of Public Safety
